Nothing like a couple of acronyms put together for a weekend of fun and learning for the Girl Guides. But seriously, what is this all about? VARC! stands for 'Virtually A Region Camp' and was the first ever of its kind (that we know of). This camp involved our own Charleville Guides camping at their hut, while Longreach Guides, Wallumbilla/Roma Guides and Dalby Guides also camped at their huts simultaneously across our Major Mitchell Region. So, while we may not have been all together our Region was camping all at the same time! To unit our Districts even more, each site held their campfire at the same time with a teleconference link up with each other so in fact it was a single campfire event. Each District even had a chance to lead a variety of songs while the other Districts sang along. The Charleville Campfire hosted a special visitor - a local possum who came to listen to the girls singing! After the campfire, each District sent coded text messages for the other Districts to solve using Morse Code. An old form of communication brought back to life with modern technology. Speaking of modern technology - our Guides also participated in JOTI (Jamboree On The Internet). This is an international event involving Guides and Scouts from across the world communicating online across one weekend. Our Guides spoke to Guides/Scouts from several countries including: Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Canada, Qatar, United States, England, Germany, Brazil, Norway, Mexico, Egypt and Indonesia. | Special thanks to Charleville School of Distance Education for their hire of tablet computers for our Guides to use. Also special thanks to Telstra for their sponsoring of our Internet connection over the weekend. Finally, thanks to 'Sue' for her help as an adult volunteer over the weekend. |
