The second Sunday in September is 'Save the Bilby' Day and in 2012 the 1st Charleville Girl Guides gave service and helped out. As Charleville is the home of a captive breeding program for this endangered species, the girls thought it would be a great idea to 'lend a hand'. So they participated in the 'Save the Bilby' Crossword Competition, with two girls winning prizes, they raised funds through 'Go Green Days' at their schools, selling merchandise and helping to organise the Bilby Nature Fundraising Walk. The girls raised approximately $350 for the 'Save the Bilby' Fund. Well done girls!
A few weeks ago, the two units of Charleville Girl Guides got together for a Promise Ceremony and some
co-operation games. While many districts have their units come together often, Charleville is a special case in that one unit is located in Charleville and meet face to face each week, while 2nd Charleville is a Lones Unit operating out of Charleville School of Distance Education. The girls of the 2nd unit are spread across South West Queensland from Roma to Quilpie and only get to see each other once a year as they usually only talk over the phone and the Internet. So, on this important occasion it was great to see the girls mixing with each other and having a great time with their newly met sisters and sharing the Guiding spirit. The 1st Charleville Girl Guides have completed their work on the Games Go Global badge to celebrate the 2012 London Olympics. Girls learnt about the sports involved in the Olympic Games, the history of the Games, the Paralympics and of course London. Activities included an opening ceremony, chariot racing, wrote to Australian athletes, making English cucumber sandwiches and a medal ceremony (pictured). Congratulations to all the girls who received their Bronze, Silver or Eight girls from 1st Charleville and one from 2nd Charleville were fortunate enough to go on a State Camp at Kindilan to celebrate the Queen's, and the campsites, diamond jubilee. The girls had a tremendous time furthering their skills in camping as well as getting to know some of the other Girl Guides from the Major Mitchell Region as well as from across the state. With highlights from the camp being a trip into the Big City of Brisbane, a visit to Guides Queensland Office, watching a Disney on Ice Performance, Canoeing, Rock Climbing and of course, the very, very long bus trips there and back! The Charleville Girl Guides have been making friendship bracelets for the Girl Guides in India. The project, run by the Sangam Girl Guide World Centre, allows our girls to support girls in India in an easy but meaningful way. The girls, from both Charleville units, made just over 50 bracelets to send to India where they will be sold in order to raise funds for camps and community projects. It has taken us 6 months, but the girls have enjoyed giving something to their sister Guides in India. Update 8/11/2012: The girls recieved a postcard from Sangam World Centre thanking them for their efforts - go Girls!! Thanks to generous support from the Murweh Shire Council, the Girl Guides were able to purchase and erect this plaque outside the Guide Hut. The plaque outlines the hut's history and how it started as the 'Chapel of Holy Angels'. The council also assisted with repairing, sanding and painting of our flagpole which we can use again each week. |
